Bolsward (12 km)
The city of Bolsward arose from two mound settlements on the Middelzee. Due to its favorable location, Bolsward became a trading city and port. In 1455 Bolsward received city rights and joined the Hanseatic League. After the silting up and land reclamation, Bolsward developed into an important market center. Bolsward enjoyed great prosperity in the 17th and 18th centuries through the butter and cheese trade. Much has been preserved from this time; such as the town hall in Renaissance style, the Martinikerk and beautiful facades. Bolsward is the birthplace of Gijsbert Japicx, the founder of Frisian literature. His statue is at the Martinikerk. Anyone who visits Bolsward should definitely not forget Sonnema. The Frisian Berenburg is made here according to a secret recipe. And who knows, you might even get a real Bolswarder Oliekoek there.
