Workum (13 km)
Workum is one of the most beautiful Frisian towns. There is still a lot of well-preserved cultural beauty. Along the muted Wijmerts are beautiful facades and monumental buildings, such as the St. Gertrudiskerk, the Waag and the town hall. Workum originated along the Wijmerts. As early as the 14th century, many ships left Workum via the Wijmerts to the Zuiderzee and far beyond. Workum also had a fishing fleet and acquired rights to the eel fishery on the Thames in London. In addition to maritime activities, the revival of livestock farming and industry also ensured prosperity. There were industrial enterprises such as shipyards, sailmakers, weaving mills and spinning mills. A flourishing cloth and linen industry arose, with the Workumer El (71 cm) being set as the benchmark for the whole of Friesland in 1504. Due to the presence of suitable clay, there were many potteries. The street name 'Pothûswyk' is a reminder of that time. When you walk through the town, the many facades tell the beautiful stories of the past
